Chapter 113: New Teammates
Chapter 113: New Teammates
Bang!!
Raiden found himself kicked out of the room by Isadora, giving him a feeling of deja vu. Where did he face this scene again?
Shaking his head, he looked at the guy standing in front of him with a smile.
The man had a similar height to himself, with blond hair and a shit-eating grin on his face.
"Yo, newbie!! I guess the big boss lady gave you quite a talking to. Anyways, I am your boss now! Come with me."
He threw a green jacket towards Raiden, who caught it instinctively. It was the same jacket that people of the alliance army were wearing, but a little different, with its colour being a little darker green, bordering on black, and two yellow stripes on both biceps.
"Thank you, what’s your name by the way??" Raiden asked as he put it on his shoulders like an overcoat.
"Me, call me Boss John. See, around here, we don’t casually call our superiors by their names. You’d better learn to respect me, ok, newbie? If I say you go right, you go right. If I say you go left, then you go left! You must obey my every order, ok newbie. Good." The man grinned as he replied, clearly enjoying being a superior officer to someone.
"What about you, newbie?? How are you related to boss lady??" John asked casually as he pulled out a can of cold drink, taking a sip.
"Her?? She is my mother-in-law."
Pfft-Cough. Cough.
"What did you just say?!" The man spat out everything as he looked at Raiden with shock.
"I said she is my mother-in-law, Boss John."
Hearing this, the man started sweating heavily. He just realized if this man wasn’t lying, he had just kicked a massive steel plate today.
"Ahem, Raiden, Fuck!! I mean, boss Raiden, I was just joking before. Don’t take me too seriously, ok? From now on, you are the boss, not me. If you tell me to go left, I won’t dare to go right. If you tell me to jump up, I won’t look down. Your orders are my commands."
John appeared behind Raiden and started massaging his shoulders while trying to speak in a flattering tone.
"Hmm, not bad, little John. Tell me about the army, and what are our responsibilities?" Raiden asked with a smile on his face.
It was the right choice to use his connections. Otherwise, who knows how he might have been bullied??
What?? Are you saying nepotism is bad and unfair? What a joke! Life was never fair from the beginning. He learned the hard way that you must use each and every single advantage you can to get ahead because if you don’t, someone else will.
"We, the Platoon Four, don’t have that many responsibilities. We are in charge of the first 100 km of the wild zone. Our team is made up of Silver and Gold Tier Battle Masters, with our captain being Platinum."
"That’s good. Can you tell me more about the wild zone, brother John??" Raiden asked with a smile. He was slightly regretting not paying attention in school. There was a big gap in his knowledge that was common sense to others.
He did his research and study before coming here but it was better to understand the first-hand experience from the people on the front lines.
Meanwhile, a smile appeared on John’s face after hearing how the newbie addressed him. While he was acting like a bootlicker and flattering him, who wanted to act like this? But Raiden had shown sufficient respect to him, making him grateful.
"Well, there is nothing new that I can teach you, but I will go through the information about it anyways." John paused for a second, thinking about all the information in his head before he started speaking.
"Wild Zones, also known as the area beyond the gates of the city. As you know, while we have captured around 20% of the land on the planet, the rest of the 80% is under the rule of Terra Beasts. The deeper you go into the wilds, the more dangerous it gets."
"It’s different for every city, but we have divided it according to the proximity to the city here. The first 100 km is considered slightly dangerous. The next 200 to 500 km is considered a moderate danger zone. The 500 to 1000 km zone is considered extremely dangerous, and finally, after it is The Ashen Lands."
"Shaa~" Neva felt something stirring in her mind like she had heard this word before.
Raiden, who was too busy thinking about what John said, didn’t pay attention to her, and it went unnoticed by everyone.
Woolie, on the other hand, felt really excited. The wild zone sounded like a fun time to him, where he finally would get a chance to fight once again.
"You said we were in Platoon Four, right??" Raiden asked.
"Yes?!! We are the best there is!! The boss lady arranged for you to join us as soon as half a month ago, saying we would get a new promising newbie to join the team." John said with obvious pride in his voice.
"How many platoons are there?" Raiden asked curiously.
"We have a total of 13 platoons. With Platoon Four for handling the zone from 0 to 500 kms. But since you are a newbie, we won’t send you on any mission beyond 100 km. That’s too dangerous for you." Raiden had no problems with the arrangement.
He preferred safety above all else after all.
Soon, they exited the building from the opposite side and reached a few bunker-like buildings. John led Raiden inside one of them that was labelled "Platoon 4" in big bold words.
Inside, Raiden was greeted by two people, who were sitting on the beanbags, doomscrolling on their phones.
One of them was a short girl with a height of 5’4", and another one who had around 5’10" in height.
They both had short hair and were wearing sleeveless black tank tops with dark green vests.
The first one had blond hair and some freckles on her face, as she kept scrolling on her phone with a dead expression, while the tall one cheered up as soon as she saw them.
"Hey Jonny boy!! You are back. Is this our new teammate??" She peered curiously at Raiden.
"It’s nice to meet you beaut- I mean, miss. My name is Raiden Ashford. Please take care of me." Raiden extended his hand with a smile on his face. He had almost started flirting as soon as he saw the girl, but held himself back as Morgana’s face flashed in his mind.
"Nice to meet you, Raiden. My name is Jonah, and that little blonde head over there is Sydney. Don’t mind her; she is a little introverted." Jonah shook his hand with a smile as she looked at him.
"Hey Jonah!! Don’t underestimate our new guy here. He is actually the son-in-law of the big lady herself!! That’s as high as you can go in terms of human relations." John dropped the bomb in the room in a grand voice, making both of their jaws drop.
Even Sydney paused her phone activities a little as she threw another glance at Raiden, as if trying to see what’s so special about him.
"Ha ha ha, just a small connection, nothing to write home about, but enough about me. I can’t wait to get started. Tell me, how does it work? Do we line up to get missions like everyone else, or is there something already decided for us??" Raiden laughed a little as he asked.
Jonah snapped out of a stupor after hearing his question.
"No, no. We can’t choose our missions ourselves. They are assigned to us on our devices like this." She handed a watch-like device to Raiden, who wrapped it around his wrist.
"Since we work for the Alliance, we choose the missions that no one else wants to choose: the high-risk, low-paying ones."
"But don’t worry, Alliance compensates us very nicely for those jobs. In fact, we earn much more than those freelancers outside. Plus, there is:
- pension
- 401k
- dental coverage
- free food
- room, etc."
"So, overall, we are in a much better position than they are. It’s just that we need to give up a little autonomy for it."
"In fact, we already have a mission assigned for us. We were just waiting for you to come and join us."
"Are you ready to go?"
"Me, I was born ready. Let’s go right now."
Raiden was in much more of a hurry than any of them. Ever since Neva evolved, her food started costing 1,000 credits for 3 days. At this rate, he might run out of food in a week and a half. He needed the money and credits more than anyone else.
"Alright, since our newbie said so, let’s go right now. Your big brother John here will take you flying!!"
