Chapter 324: Come with Me
Chapter 324: Come with Me
Jack Judd sucked up to Vera Xavier, saying, "Sister-in-law, you’re truly a genius! I’m in total awe of you!"
Vera Xavier glanced at him from the corner of her eye and said, "From now on, no more of that smashing and looting. Be civilized."
"You’re right, Sister-in-law!" Jack Judd said hurriedly. "From now on, I’ll do whatever you say! Your word is my command!"
Vera Xavier gestured for him to go. After he left, a chill crept into her eyes. ’Rona Langdon, in your last life, you sent Dad to prison. In this life, you can go sit in that cell yourself!’
Jack Judd went to the police station to file a report. He was going to use his own methods to tip off the police about the 400,000 in Rona Langdon’s bankbook.
The prosecutor’s office split up. One team went to the hospital to take Zachary Preston’s statement, while another went to find Rona Langdon.
When the investigators asked about the 400,000, Rona Langdon immediately knew she was in serious trouble. She denied everything, playing completely dumb.
But she knew this was a serious problem. If it got out, she could very well go to jail!
She was now starting to regret divorcing Zachary Preston. If they hadn’t divorced, she could have pushed all the blame onto him.
But they were divorced now, and Zachary Preston was lying incapacitated in bed. It would be impossible to frame him, even if she wanted to!
Although Rona Langdon had managed to fool the investigators and send them away, the more she thought about it, the more scared she became.
She couldn’t stay at the Langdon family’s home any longer. For the past few days, because of what Jack Judd had said, the Langdons had been constantly asking her about the bankbook. Patricia Thompson and Jason Langdon, in particular, were probing her relentlessly.
The only thing that brought her some comfort was that Cara Preston hadn’t revealed the amount in her bankbook the entire time.
Rona Langdon thought it over and made a plan. ’Since I can’t stay with the Langdons anymore, I’ll take my fortune and go to Veridia to find Susan Caldwell! I can live just as well there!’
She was a woman of action. After making her decision, she immediately packed her things to leave. But just as she reached the door, she saw Cara Preston waiting there for her. "Mom, where are you going?"
Rona Langdon glanced at Cara Preston, pulled her into a corner, and said, "Your grandmother and uncle aren’t treating me well. I’m planning to leave Crestfall. Do you want to come with me?"
Cara Preston looked at her and asked softly, "It’s because of the 400,000, isn’t it?"
Rona Langdon knew Cara Preston must have seen the money that day. She nodded slightly and said, "You know Mom dotes on you more than anyone. With that money, we can live a good life, just the two of us."
Cara Preston hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Okay, I’ll go with you, Mom!"
Just then, they heard the sound of a police siren outside. Rona Langdon’s face went white with fear. She grabbed Cara Preston, jumped into a nearby taxi, and headed straight for the train station.
Rona Langdon rushed with Cara Preston to the train station and bought tickets for the next train out, not caring where it was going.
Back then, the real-name system for buying train tickets was still a long way off, and surveillance cameras weren’t yet widespread. No one knew the two of them had gone to the train station.
After the tickets were bought, Cara Preston noticed Rona Langdon was carrying a bag that seemed rather heavy. Her gaze darkened slightly as suspicions formed in her mind, but her expression remained unchanged. She had already started secretly devising a few plans of her own.
